Digitise import and export checks to fix Brexit ‘mess’
Responding to the disappointing UK trade figures for August 2021 from the ONS, Hilary Benn MP, co-convenor of the UK Trade and Business Commission said:
"These figures support projections from the IMF that the UK's recovery will be slower than forecast earlier and our economy will still be 3 per cent smaller in 2024. Industry leaders have pointed to increased costs, red tape and labour shortages arising from Brexit as a significant barrier to importing and exporting.
"Our cross-party commission has made 64 proposals on practical ways the Government can make things easier for importers and exporters including digitising checks and protecting standards. They must now seriously implement them to do something about the mess that has been created."
